Featured Theme: Stream Girls

We have another exciting opportunity for our older Girl Scouts. Stream Girls features brand-new activities and adventures at Camp Evelyn. This theme is meant for girls who love to go on outdoor adventures.

If you haven't read it yet, here is the description:

STREAM Girls is Trout Unlimited’s watershed STEM program for girls that builds confidence and breaks down barriers in science and the outdoors. Through the eyes of a scientist, artist, and angler, girls make a personal connection to their home waters. Trout Unlimited volunteers lead girls in observing a stream, collecting flow data, sampling macroinvertebrates (aka aquatic bugs), fly tying, and fly casting. Each day also gives the girls time to intimately explore their natural surroundings and record their thoughts, feelings, and observations in their handbooks.

We are excited to share a sneak peek of the schedule for the Stream Girls program. Here is a look at Monday's schedule:

After breakfast, campers will meet their instructors and go over the daily schedule. The first activity on the agenda is a unit on macroinvertebrates. Campers will take a look at the health of our river through water sampling.

After a break for lunch, campers will experience Fly Tying 101. During this unit, they will learn to how to tie flys for their fishing adventure.

The remainder of the afternoon will include a STREAM scavenger hunt, making water identification bracelets, and determining the flow of the river.

In the evening, campers will have the opportunity to participate in some classic camp activities such as tie-dye and swimming. There will also be plenty of time for showers!

The remainder of the week will focus on fishing skills and the last day will include a field trip to a local fish farm where campers will have the opportunity to put their skills to the test.

Winter Fun at Camp Evelyn

This winter, we had the opportunity to host winter break camp at Camp Evelyn. We hosted four different sessions with unique badge opportunities. Overall, winter camp was a success and we are hoping to continue this next year!

Session 1: Math Magic

Campers had a blast at Math Magic. In the morning, campers learned about weather-related math.  Campers made their own sundials to tell time and barometers to measure air pressure. We also made neighborhood maps with keys and found the estimated age of the trees (the oldest was 82 years old). We still had time to get outside and play in the snow before it all melted. Below is a picture of campers attempting to calculate the age of a fallen tree.

Session 2: Girl Scout Investigators

So much fun was had at the Girl Scout Investigators session! We learned about shoe prints and fingerprints in the morning. Later in the afternoon we went on a scavenger hunt and solved a mystery at a beauty pageant. There was also a taste test challenge which included some strange foods. Campers still had a chance to enjoy making snowmen and snow forts. Below is a picture of campers trying to find all of the items during the scavenger hunt. The most difficult item to find was a shovel!

Session 3: Camp Invention

We got creative during Camp Invention! Campers had the opportunity to design their own good or service and share it with their peers. Some of our favorite projects were a robot that was designed to help the elderly with basic tasks and a toy made from a cup and balloon. We spent a little time in the snow in the morning and went for a hike around camp later in the afternoon. A favorite moment of many campers was getting to explore the pool during the winter! Below campers react to playing in a pool filled with snow.

Session 4: Snow Adventures

What a fun day we had at Sunburst Ski Hill! Campers enjoyed skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. We are ending the day with hot chocolate, board games, and shopping in the Canteen. This was the smallest session, but it was packed with good times! The picture below shows a group of campers posing at the top of the tubing hill.

Did your camper attend winter camp at Camp Evelyn? If so, we would love to know what they thought in the comments!
